The hardware of the energy transition: our six core technologies
Our six core technologies
Which technologies do we need to make Europe climate-neutral? The European Union has defined clear priorities in the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA). In Schleswig-Holstein, we use these fields as our guide to support the development of new industrial production capacity in a targeted way.
Batteries and energy storage
Power on demand
The focus is on the development and manufacturing of storage systems for electricity, gas and heat. This also includes the necessary power electronics as well as well-designed recycling and circular-economy concepts to ensure that valuable raw materials are used efficiently.
Hydrogen
The energy carrier of tomorrow
Hydrogen is an indispensable building block of the energy transition. Here we look at the entire chain – from electrolysers for production and fuel cells through to safe storage and transport solutions. The connection to the German hydrogen core network provides a solid foundation for this.
CO₂ management
Smart cycle instead of emissions
In some industrial processes, the generation of CO₂ unfortunately cannot be avoided. That is why we support technologies that capture this CO₂, put it to good use or transport it safely in order to create closed carbon cycles. Permanent underground geological storage of CO₂ in Schleswig-Holstein is not part of our Net Zero Valley.
Climate-friendly industry
Innovative processes for green manufacturing
We promote solutions that help energy-intensive companies significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. This can be achieved, for example, by electrifying production processes, running them on hydrogen or making them more efficient through waste heat recovery. Our enormous supply of green electricity is a real locational advantage here.
Electric drives for transport
Clean routes on water and on land
Whether on the road, on rail or on the water – we rely on electric, hydrogen-based and hybrid drives. Our high-performance seaports and the Kiel Canal make Schleswig-Holstein the ideal place for maritime applications and clean logistics.
Sustainable alternative fuels
New momentum for mobility
Since not every sector (such as aviation or shipping) can simply be electrified, we need synthetic alternatives. We promote the development and production of e-fuels, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and biogenic fuels.
Plus important complementary technologies
For the main areas to work together smoothly in practice, a strong foundation is needed. That is why we complement our portfolio with indispensable complementary technologies:
- Wind power as a reliable source of renewable energy.
- Power grid and charging technologies for industry and transport, including smart grid integration and digital control.
- Energy efficiency technologies, for example modern heating and energy systems as well as smart waste heat recovery.
- Biotechnological solutions that actively contribute to climate protection.
